Salt Lake City Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
I understand it is important to you to know the doctor who will perform your plastic surgery. I look forward to meeting with you personally but in the meantime, allow me to introduce myself.
While I might have been born in Chicago, Illinois, I truly consider myself a Utah native as I have lived here since 1955. I am one of seven children and loved spending my childhood in a state that offers such diverse outdoor recreation opportunities as well as a sophisticated medical community. You might say that I went into the family business having followed my father into medicine and making him very proud to continue the tradition of Dr. Thomas into another generation.
I attended public school in Salt Lake City and then headed to the University of Utah (go Utes!) for my undergraduate and medical school, graduating in 1974. I did my residency training in general surgery and plastic surgery at UCLA Medical Center (still trying to catch up on sleep from those grueling first years). I completed an additional fellowship in craniofacial surgery under the tutelage of Dr. Henry Kawamoto, one of the world’s leading experts in this field, at UCLA. In January 1986, I began my work in plastic surgery.
From 1990 to 1993, in addition to maintaining my private practice, I headed back to school… this time on the other side of the desk. I became a full time member of the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Surgery in Plastic Surgery. It was great working in the academic world and having a chance to teach up and coming surgeons my techniques and philosophies.
I think giving back is an important part of life and my specialty has allowed me to do just that on a variety of fronts. I was on the Board of Directors of Interplast, Inc., now known as Resurge, a non-profit organization providing reconstructive surgery to patients in underdeveloped countries. and have volunteered my services on several trips to South and Central American, Asia, and Africa. Talk about doing something that makes you feel good. Closer to home, I am past President of the Utah State Plastic Surgery Society and am past Chairman of the Division of Plastic Surgery at LDS Hospital and Primary Children's Medical Center.
On the personal front – I have three wonderful children, two girls and a boy, and three times over been bestowed the great honor of becoming a grandpa. I am an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys skiing, biking, traveling and golfing.
